  • 📚 Time to Read Volunteers 📖 Are you able to spare us an hour of your time to help support pupils’ Reading? Our Time to Read Volunteer Programme has been running successfully for a few years now and we would like a few more volunteers to join our team for the school year ahead. What’s needed? It’s only an hour of your time after the school run eg 9:15-10.15am once a week. This role may suit parents, grandparents, maybe someone retired from work but looking to do something rewarding in our community or maybe someone looking to gain some experience volunteering in a primary school setting to enhance their cv. What do you have to do? Sit and relax, listening to reading with a selected pupil to help boost their confidence in reading. Anyone wishing to take part please contact the School Office on 028 44 841343 or email kburns395@c2kni.net

  • Eco Schools News - school Orchard

    Fri 28 Mar 2025

    Our School Orchard 🌳🍎 🍏 🍐 🌳

After successfully applying for a grant for orchard trees for our school we had a special delivery of apple, pear and plum trees.

Our Primary 6, with help from Robbie, had the challenge of planting the trees.

We choose to place our orchard next to our Statue of Mary’s Grotto and Prayer Space.

We look forward to the trees growing and blossoming of the years ahead hopefully bearing some nice apples, pears and plums!

    P7 attend BeeSafe NM&D Council Event 🐝

Today our P.7 pupils had the opportunity to take part in the BeeSafe Event.  This was organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and took place in the Ballymote Centre, Downpatrick.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue talked to the pupils about fire safety in the home, water safety and the dangers of wildfires.  In a section of talks about staying safe in the home, children loved the Who Wants to be a Millionaire Quiz, unfortunately, it wasn’t real money!

Pupils were spoken to about mental well-being and how to look after their mental health using the 5 steps for wellbeing.

The pupils also visited the Education Bus where Translink discussed the importance of safety at bus stops and when travelling by bus.

Our pupils learned so much and had a great morning!

  • Autism NI Award

    Wed 12 Mar 2025

🌟St Nicholas’ PS, Ardglass receives Autism NI’s - Impact Award Champion School status 🌟

Today in school we held a special whole school assembly, with our Chair of our Board of Governors Mrs Hilary Milligan in attendance, to celebrate our success after being externally assessed by Autism NI and having received formal accreditation as an autism inclusive school.

Over the past year, our whole staff, both teachers and support staff, have been participating in extensive staff training and professional development with Autism NI.

Our aim was to increase accessibility, promote social inclusion and increase staff confidence. Evidence now shows many positive changes to our daily practices alongside use of newly purchased resources and effective use of our sensory spaces in school by our staff. It is clear to see our staff are now more confident with challenges related to autism.

All our staff have contributed positively to aspects of the Impact Award and we thank all our staff for their positive approach to this period of staff development and improvement in provision.

Our aim going forward is to  continue to further develop our skills and knowledge to improve practices within St Nicholas’ PS, Ardglass to help meet the needs of our pupils in today’s world.
